Blip

This is a story about two different creatures that are trying to rule the same planet. Quite an amusing and nicely developed story, with very clean graphics. 

It's always interesting to notice the solutions chosen to tell stories and transmit ideas, after all, these little aliens that have such non-antropomorphic shapes have lots of appeal! The timing and posing also help make this a very fun animation. It was directed by Ben Harper and Sean Mullen from the Irish studio Giant Creative.

Este curta é sobre dois aliens tentando dominar o mesmo planeta. Uma história bastante divertida e bem-contada com um design peculiar com formas bem definidas e simples. 

É sempre muito interessante observar as soluções escolhidas para contar histórias e transmitir idéias, afinal, essas criaturinhas, que de antropomórfico praticamente só têm os olhos, têm um enorme apelo! O timing e as poses também ajudam a tornar a animação bem divertida. Dirigido por Ben Harper e Sean Mullen do estúdio irlandês Giant Creative. 

Origins

Este curta foi o projeto de graduação de Robert Showalter no Ringling College of Art.

A história é contada de forma muito poética. Trata de um robozinho que tem uma chance de descobrir de onde vem e a que lugar pertence. Para mais informações sobre o autor, visite seu blog.

This short is Robert Showalter's thesis project at the Ringling College of Art.

This funny short was done as a graduation project by Tin Tey at the Academy of Art University. It's about how people act differently when there are obstacles in the way, but with animals as characters. I suppose this qualify as a fable? :-) Visit the author's page for informations about him.

Ormie

Feito por Arc Productions, do Canadá, este curta divertido é sobre um porquinho que vai tentar as mais mirabolantes estratégias para alcançar um pote de biscoito - claro que não será fácil. Posso falar sobre quão bem-feita é a animação, mas vale mais a pena conferir com os próprios olhos logo de uma vez. :-)

This funny and very nicely executed short by Arc Productions, from Canada, is about a little pig that will use the craziest strategies to get to a jar of cookies - of course, that can't be too easy. I could talk about how well-done this animation is, but it's better to just check it out and see. :-)

The Saga Of Biôrn

Feito por um grupo de alunos do Animation Workshop, na Dinamarca, este curta 3D trata de Biôrn, um viking que quer morrer em combate de forma honrosa para ir ao paraíso viking, Valhalla - um lugar animado, cheio de bebida e devassidão. Infelizmente para ele, não é fácil morrer do modo certo...

Done by a group of students of the Animation Workshop, in Denmark, this 3D short tells us the story of Biôrn, a viking that wants to die an honorable death in a combat to go to Valhalla, the viking paradise - a place full of drinking and debauchery. Unfortunately for him, it's not easy dying the right way...

Este curta 3D foi feito pelo estúdio espanhol Kandor Graphics em conjunto com a produtora de Antonio Banderas Green Moon como parte do processo de P&D para juntar conhecimento para depois fazer um longa em 3D estereoscópico. É o primeiro curta estereoscópico 3D espanhol!

A animação mostra uma senhora esperando pela morte para reencontrar seu marido. O tema pesado é tratado com delicadeza e graça. Clique neste link para mais informações sobre o curta (em espanhol).

This 3D short was done by Spanish Kandor Graphics and co-produced by Antonio Banderas production company as part of the R&D process to gather knowledge and talent to make a 3D steresocopic feature film. It's the first Spanish 3D stereoscopic short!

The animation shows an old lady waiting for death to meet her husband again. Despite the sad topic, the story is told in a very delicate way and is quite funny. Click on this link for more info about the short.

Sintel

Blender é um software livre bem completo para criações 3D. De tempos em tempos, a Fundação Blender faz curtas para validar e continuar melhorando o programa. Sintel é o mais recente e conta a história de uma moça em busca de um dragãozinho. Na página do projeto é possível ver detalhes sobre o desenvolvimento. Em diversos momentos a comunidade participou também, fazendo criações que foram adicionadas à animação. O resultado está abaixo e deixa claro o potencial do programa.

Blender is a free 3D content creation suite. From time to time, Blender Foundation makes a short to validate and improve the program. Sintel is the most recent one and tells the story of a girl searching a little dragon. You can find details about the development at the project's homepage. The comunity participated too, making creations that were added to the animation. The result below shows how powerful the program is.

Animusic is a company that creates animated music. They have a proprietary software that algorithmically synchronizes music and animation. The results are fantastic! This is just one of their incredible animations filled with little details :-)

Animusic foi fundada por Wayne Lytle que em 1989 começou suas experiências com animação por computador gerada por música. Em 95 ele convidou o artista digital Dave Crognale para criar instrumentos virtuais e o ambiente ao redor. Como está escrito na página, Wayne pode ser considerado o engenheiro e Dave o artista. 

Eles usam softwares comerciais para modelagem, shading e renderização, enquanto que a animação dos instrumentos é sempre calculada proceduralmente usando o software customizado. A técnica deles é baseada em nota e não baseada em som.

Animusic was founded by Wayne Lytle who in 1989 began his experiences with music-driven computer animation in 1989. In 95 he invited digital artist Dave Crognale to build virtual instruments and their surroundings. As they say on the webpage, Wayne could be considered the engineer and Dave the artist.

They use commercial software  for modeling, shading and rendering, while the instrument animation is always calculated procedurally using custom created software. Their technique is note-based as opposed to sound-based.

Blind Spot (Ponto Cego)

Um humor talvez duvidoso, mas a história contada é de forma bem eficaz. Trata-se de um assalto a uma loja de conveniência que se desenrola de forma surpreendente. Mais uma animação de alta qualidade da escola francesa Les Gobelins.
O curta foi criado por Johanna Bessiere, Nicolas Chauvelot, Olivier Clert, Cecile Dubois Herry, Yvon Jardel and Simon Rouby.

The humor might have a dark edge to it, but the story is told very effectively. It's about a robbery that happes in a convenience store and has a surprising ending. Another high-quality animation from the french school Les Gobelins.

Good Vibrations

Um curta criado pelo mesmo diretor de Skhizein (pode-se ver as semelhanças nos personagens por exemplo), Jérémy Clapin. Essa animação foi criada para um projeto de uma companhia de seguros que pretendia sensibilizar as pessoas em relação à sua responsabilidade na sociedade.


A short created by the same director of Skhizein (you can see similarities in the characters, for example), Jérémy Clapin. This animation was created for the Responsibility Project, a campaign from the insurance company Liberty Mutual.

Ninjas and romance? Yes, these are two genres that mixed well in Daniel Klug's short that is being featured in this month's Animation Mentor Newsletter. This is a nice example of how one can combine their interests in a short.

Granny O'Grimm's Sleeping Beauty

This one is an oscar nominee and winner of several awards...for those who haven't seen it, it's very funny 2D/3D animation. It's a granmother telling a fairy tale to her grandchild...but it's told in a very peculiar manner :-)
Brownbag films are planning to make a sequence out of this idea, hopefully the next short comes out soon!

Pigeon: Impossible

This is a funny 3D animation, written/directed by Lucas Martell. It took almost 5 years to complete and about a hundred inspired volunteers. The result is a high-quality, interesting and amusing 6 minute short.
To know more about how this project was developed, check out the blog and also the podcast. There, in several short chapters, Lucas Martell shares how the story was developed, details about the lighting, rigging, and so on. Definitely worth a watch!

Esta é uma animação 3D divertida, escrita/dirigda por Lucas Martell. Levou quase 5 anos para ser completada e em torno de cem voluntários. O resultado é um curta de 6 minutos de alta qualidade, interessante e engraçado.

6 students at Gobelins co-directed this graduation film (www.oktapodi.com). It's a fast-paced and funny story about an octopi couple that doesn't want to be apart - or killed. ;-)

Skhizein

This is such an amazing idea from Jérémy Clapin and was very nicely implemented. Skhizein means "sepparate" in greek and that's exactly what happens to the main character after an meteorite falls close to him: his body is 91 cm displaced from where it should be. A nice metaphor for the feeling of not belonging, which everyone can relate to at some point.

Essa é uma idéia fantástica de autoria de Jérémy Clapin e foi muito bem executada. Skhizein significa "separar" em grego e isso é exatamente o que acontece com o personagem após a queda de um meteorito perto dele: seu corpo fica deslocado 91 cm de onde deveria estar. Uma bela metáfora para o sentimento universal de não pertencer.

A really funny and appealing 3D animation of a tormented guy that's working long hours at the office. It's Mike Stern's final animation for the Animation Mentor course.

I really appreciated the way this story is told, the way the words are used, the style chosen to present it. Also, it doesn't look like 3D but it is, just with texturing and compositing that gives it a 2D feel similar to watercolor paintings.
It is Lindsey Olivares' senior thesis film made at Ringling Collegue of Art and Design.
I think it's interesting to mention there's a legend that says that who folds a thousand tsuru sees their wish come true.
